Susie Mendelsson

Susie Mendelsson

Susie Mendelsson is a figurative artist who has been influenced by the German expressionists as well as medieval art. She works with paint, mixed media and monoprint on paper and has exhibited locally, nationally and internationally.

Much of Susie’s work is motivated by an exploration of personal memories and the expression of psychological states of trauma and anxiety. Though the sources of her imagery are often autobiographical, her work communicates universal concerns and emotions, especially from a woman’s perspective.

Some of her recent projects include She — images representing different facets of everywoman/ herself.  Little Little Girl   — expresses a child’s experience of the authority of a maternal figure, some with text. Under The Same Roof — shows the classic ‘distant father ‘, ‘overbearing mother’ and ‘little little girl’ all co-existing in the same house. The Untold Storyboard — are images of  scenes from an imaginary film of her life. The scenes depict apparently significant moments, important transitions, everyday concerns, the pretence of being a ‘normal’ family, etc. Women’s Work — represents the various aspects of womanhood: wife, mother, woman depicting what goes on in private when women reluctantly have to carry out their wifely duties.  Susie is  currently working on the next phase of Women’s Work: In Limbo —  which involves multiple figures in indeterminate landscapes.
