Janet Hackney
I have a BA Honours in Fashion and Textiles, from Ravensbourne College of Art, Kent and a P.G.C.E. I sold work in Covent Garden Market and Libertys whilst teaching in Bedfordshire. I taught Art and Textiles to A level in St Andrew’s International School, Blantyre, Malawi for 11 years, where my 3 children enjoyed a glorious African childhood. I introduced Textiles to the school with great success, with pupils accepted into Loughborough and the Royal College of Art. I now teach part time in Kilkeel High School where I actively encourage pupils in the Art Department to investigate the pleasures of working with needle and thread. I live in the County Down between the mountains and the sea and I am an active member and regular exhibitor in the NI Embroidery Guild.
My mixed media pieces incorporate ideas triggered by family mementoes such as photos, fabrics, stitches and buttons, combining patchwork, embroidery, found items and coloured images which form a contemporary synergy of ‘old and new’.
I use particular images with universal themes of kinship, remembrance and familiar domestic items imbued with meaning. These pieces tell a story which is particular to the contents but have the universal appeal of family memories and creativity.
I also incorporate batik into work inspired by the stone walls found around the Mountains of Mourne. My work is constantly evolving…. with emerging themes and new combinations.
