Since graduating from the University of Central England, now Birmingham City University, with a MA in Textiles I have been using a variety of felt making techniques to produce, initially fashion and interior accessories. After a few years I found that my products were being copied so I gradually developed a technique of making 3-D sculptural vessels. Using my knowledge of the felt making process and understanding of the way the wool reacts during the felting I was able to develop a method of creating a fabric that could be moulded and would hold the shape of the vessel without the use of stiffeners, but still retain the intrinsic tactile qualities which make textiles so appealing. I also use Shibori dyeing techniques to manipulate the surface of the vessels
My inspiration for their shape comes from seedpods, shells and other natural containers.
Two years ago I was selected to take part in the Transitions exhibition, curated by Bilston Craft Gallery. I used knitting and stitching techniques to make a body of work which included vessels, made using materials such as hemp yarn, silk string and furniture webbing. This exhibition which currently touring the country and I continue to use these techniques.
