Equate: Art+Maths=?
A Seminar by Artist Lesley Whelan, and Mathematician Adam Boddison will talk about their collaboration Equate. This seminar is open to all….
Venue: Institute for Creative Enterprise (ICE), Coventry Technology Park, Parkside CV1 2QR
Date and time: Thursday 30th April 2009 - 5:30pm-6:30pm
Lesley Whelan is a Midlands based visual artist who studied Art at Birmingham and now works from a studio on The Canal Basin in Coventry. Lesley became Artist in Residence in 2003 at Winterbourne Botanic Garden, Birmingham University, after being awarded The Stanley Smith Bursary. She worked from a studio located in The Gardens often alongside a Botanist, and used the gardens extensive research material and local expertise to inform her work, researching the botanical history of the West Midlands region and producing an intense body of work. The work went on to tour to 10 gallery settings around the UK (exhibition entitled ‘Taken Root’).
In 2008 she was awarded funding from Arts Council England to work alongside a Mathematician Adam Boddison from The University of Warwick looking at mathematical patterns found in nature. The project was named ‘Equate’.
This seminar event will allow Lesley and Adam to open up their creative collaboration and create a discourse surrounding their project so far. Both Lesley and Adam have been documenting the highs and lows of collaboration in their own chosen format and will be presenting their thoughts in this seminar. This is a must for anyone looking at collaborating across disciplines and fields of study, as the artists will be unpicking their process.
‘The journey seems as though it’s only just beginning but there will be an opportunity to share what has happened so far, the highs, the lows and the inevitable learning that is starting to take shape…....‘ Lesley Whelan
