“Water-shed” by Edmund de Waal

An exhibition of new work by Edmund de Waal, one of the country’s leading contemporary ceramicists, will open at Leamington Spa Art Gallery & Museum on Friday 22 January 2010 running until 11 April 2010.  As well as an opportunity to see recent examples of the artist’s work, the exhibition ‘water-shed’, will feature a specially commissioned artwork by the same title.

Edmund de Waal is a potter, writer, curator and Professor of Ceramics at the University of Westminster. He is represented in many international collections and has exhibited widely at major museums and galleries, including Tate Britain, Cheltenham Spa Art Gallery and Museum and the National Museum Wales. De Waal’s work concentrates on artistic interventions with architectural settings and museum collections. He recently created an ambitious site-specific installation for the newly redisplayed ceramics galleries at the Victoria and Albert Museum. This exhibition will explore the use of vessels in medicine, drawing inspiration from the collection at Leamington Spa Art Gallery & Museum and the former use of the Royal Pump Rooms for medical treatments. A series of events including talks and workshops for all ages will accompany the exhibition.
