Engage Communities in the Arts
17 September 2008
CLOSED
Course Details
The course provides advice, guidance and helpful hints to artists who would like to work on creative projects within community settings, youth groups etc. It will also be relevant for arts development officers who support artists working in these areas. This course is not intended to address the content of individual workshops, but will focus on the skills needed to approach and begin work with organisations in a community setting effectively and successfully.
Who is it for?
The course is for arts officers, artists and other arts workers who have little or limited experience in this area.
Outline
Using a range of methods including trainer input, discussion, group work and practical exercises, this one day session will focus on things to consider before deciding which communities you would like to work with. It will cover: how to make your approach; understanding and appreciating what’s important to the community: and working effectively with other organisations. The session will also consider different models of engaging with the community to clarify expectations and acknowledge diversity but avoid a ‘one size fits all’ approach.
At the end of the day, participants will have:
- An overview of different models of community engagement
- An understanding of how to explore the needs of community groups and make an approach
- An understanding of the personal skills required to engage with the community
