This three day masterclass workshop will be run by Liz Aggiss and Billy Cowie and will aim to kick-start the participants into the world of screen dance.
Outline
Liz and Billy are acknowledged leaders in the arena of installation-based screen dance, with a cross-genre style integrating performance, film, text and music, blurring the boundaries between high art and popular culture.
This workshop is open to artists from of any discipline whose work defies category and who delight in crossing boundaries.
The three days will begin with a lecture presentation and discussion of Aggiss/Cowie’s work, focussing on questions around hybrid performance languages, performance as content, process and the fluidity between reality and illusion, apocryphal performance and the distinct solo voice, offsetting viewing habits by playing with site, reviewing time in a climate where speed has become the agency of value.
Practical sessions led by Liz and Billy will focus on physical performance skills, fast tasking, crisp thinking, language that explores hybridity, engaging the physical, textual and filmic. During the three days, participants will be set a number of creative tasks to fulfil and then be invited to show that work for critical feedback and mentoring. Participants will not need any ‘dance’ experience, but should have a desire to move, however minimally and gesturally. Whilst participants will not need to have experience as film-makers, they will need to bring with them a digital video camera which uses mini DV tapes (please bring at least two tapes), and be aware of and able to use its basic functions, as each participant will at some point be called upon to film some part of group collaborative workings.
The course is for a maximum number of 18 participants and the cost for the three days is £250, which will include all course materials, etc, but will not include lunch or accommodation, although we can provide information about local amenities. Each day will run from 10.00am until 6.00pm, including breaks. The venue for the masterclass will be the Ellen Terry Building, Coventry University, CV1 5RW, which is situated a short walking distance from Coventry City Centre, easily accessible by public transport with car parking near-by. Participants will be working in a variety of spaces, internal and external, from which to draw inspiration. The majority of the building is fully accessible.
For participants travelling from outside the West Midlands information can be given about local accommodation options. Please contact info@amtcc.org.uk for details.
