Consulting With the Under-18s
14 July 2007
CLOSED
Course Details
Increasing the participation of children and young people in projects that affect them is important, but it can be difficult. Poorly delivered consultation can lead to frustration or failure and may be interpreted as tokenism or, even worse, manipulation. This course is designed to give you practical help to carry out successful consultations with the under-18s.
Who is it for?
This course has been designed for artists and organisations that have a responsibility for children and young people’s participation or those whose work involves interaction with young people, especially in arts projects.
This is an introduction to engaging with children and young people and you do not need previous experience of this work to benefit from participating in this course.
Outline
Using information materials, discussion, practical and interactive exercises and activities, and case studies of playtrain consultation projects, the day will help you to reflect on the barriers to and benefits of participation and show you how to avoid the most common pitfalls of encouraging involvement. The day will be tailored to help you apply what you have learned to your own work.
By attending this course you will:
- Cover the essential legislative and policy background to children’s rights
- Reflect on the barriers to and benefits of participation
- Recognise and avoid the most common pitfalls of children and young people’s participation
- Learn practical consultation methods for involving children and young people in decision-making
- Plan how to introduce a children and young people’s participation strategy for your own organisation or project
